Lesson 5: Random word/ Image Assiociation

What is Random Word and Image Association?

Random word and Image Association is an idea generator, to help people to generate new idea trough random word.

Random Word
Random stimulate your brain for new idea. Where you can find them? You can find word everywhere, just look around. Waiting for bus in a bus stop, what you see when you waiting fro bus to arrive? There millions of word around you. Internet you can find billions of word in the Internet, you can find tons of word in books, dictionary.

Random Words works in particular by making you go elsewhere for ideas, and hence pushes you out of your current thinking rut. It uses the principle of forced association to make you think in new ways and create very different ideas.

Lecture asked us to do a exercise, we need to create something scary to solve our problem.
Problem: How to keep people away from a specific area?
Word: Kitten
Association: sharp claws, fur, fierce, mammals
Sentences: Sharp Claws- A picture shows very sharp and deathly spike in the sign post.
Fur              - Plant a very tall, long, itchy and furry grass around the area.
Fierce          - Put a fierce animal as a sign post.
Mammals     - Put a lion face on the sign post.

Ideas:

The long, itchy and furry grass. The grass will prevent people to go near the area.

Creative studies 11/11/2010

Lecturer gave us a test or maybe you can call it a game or something interesting.

1. Flower 0. Head
2. Lightning 9. Rain
3. Ice 8. Wood
4. Light 7. Tree
5. Fire 6. Spider
6. Duck 5. Root
7. Dog 4. Mountain
8. Oil 3. Wind
9. Leave 2. Rock
0. Fly 1. Water

Now choose three 2-digit number example 21/88/57
My number was 03/31/91

So according to your number list out the word above example 21=Lightning water, 88=Oil Wood, 57= Fire Tree

My word combination was 03=Fly Wind, 31=Ice Water, 91=Leave Water
Now make three sentences out of three word combination above.
Fly Wind: My Kite fly when Strong wind blow.
Ice Water: The Ice freezes the water.
Leave Water: I leave the class the refill my bottle with water.

Draw out three picture accordingly to your three sentences.

This is one of the possibility of the word 'Fly Wind'.

This is drawing come from the word 'Fly Wind'

This drawing come from my sentence that i wrote above. Fly wind.

This picture shows an ice containing water inside.

This picture show two ice cube floating on the water.

This is an eye ball floating on the water, and come from the word Ice water.

This picture shows the word 'leave water'.

As you can see the picture show a elevator surrounded with water.
A drop of water have the texture of a leaf, and this come from the word Leave Water.

Juxtaposition Part 2
We need to combine two animal charateristic together that is impossible to survive. Example:  Giraffe+Eagle= Earaffe

Poem Time:
Chili Love
My heart burst to flame when I see you
just like eating a Hot Spicy Chili
I desire the sensation of being Hot
but the sensation of love does not last eternity
just like eating a Hot Spicy Chili

Lesson 4: Juxtaposition

What is Juxtaposition?
Juxtaposition mean to turn something familiar into less familiar. Example:

Tomorrow got exam, but I not planning to study.
Weather very cold, but those boy do not want to wear any extra clothing.
He feeling thirsty, but he don't want to drink water.

Analogy
Metaphor is the concept of understanding one thing in terms of another. A metaphor is a figure of speech that constructs an analogy between two things or ideas; the analogy is conveyed by the use of a metaphorical word in place of some other word. For example: "Her eyes were glistening jewels". Similes use word such as "like".

This picture shows similes

Sorry for this, no offence. I just wanted to show a fail metaphor, this show sexual harassment.

Mortal and Pestal
I chose RED as my title to combine mortal and pestle together with red, the picture above shows mortal and pestle back in 2010 human uses them as color palette and brush.

Back in 2010 human, human maybe use mortal and pestle as coconut opener, as you can see the picture above.

Yes~ the GREAT WALL. Back in 2010 human use mortal and pestle as material to build GREAT WALL.

Back in 2010 human use Mortal and pestle as weapon, mortal as shield and pestle as sword as you can see in the picture.

Creative Studies Week 3

Today subject is Mind Mapping, yes~ Mind Mapping.

What is Mind Mapping?
Mind Mapping is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a Central key word or idea. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studying and organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing.
                                                                                                                                         Wikipedia

Mind maps can be used for:

Problem solving
Outline/ framework design
Anonymous collaboration
Marriage of words and visuals
Individual expression of creativity
Condensing material into a concise and memorable format
Team building or synergy creating activity
Enhancing work morale

Example of Mind Maps:

This mind map is created by my friend sit next to me during creative studies class, he ask me various of question about myself and transfer and categorized the information into a piece of paper by using mind mapping method.

Creative Studies Week 2

"A Man Paints with his Brains, not with his Hands"

                                                                      Michelangelo Buonarroti; 1475-1564/ Lecturer Notes

Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.

                                                    Steve Jobs(American Entrepreneur Apple co-Founder, b. 1955

What exactly is innovation?
Innovation is introduction of something new or a new idea. Innovation does not happen haphazardly or sporadically within organizations. Innovation is accomplished consistently and systematically, given the true voice of the customer and a process for delivering solutions. Companies that innovate successfully do so using an efficient and repeatable methodology. Success is not dependent upon genius- it emerges from the disciplined application of a proven innovation methodology.

What is Invention then?
An invention is a new composition, device, or process. An invention may be derived from a pre-existing model or idea, or it could be independently conceived in which case it may be a radical breakthrough. In addition, there is cultural invention, which is an innovative set of useful social behaviors adopted by people and passed on to others. Inventions often extend the boundaries of human knowledge or experience. An invention that is novel and not obvious to to others skilled in the same field may be able to obtain the legal protection of a patent.
                                                                                                                                          Wikipedia

Innovation is different from invention but they are still in the same field. Inventor uses existing knowledge to create new idea, while innovation adds their own idea to a existing item/object/invention, they make improvement, turn the disadvantage of the existing thing to advantage. In business, innovation is the conversion of ideas to cash, on the other hand, invention is he conversion of cash to ideas. Example innovator A creates idea to make money, while Inventor B spend money to create invention. Get the whole image?

Bill Gates(Creator of Microsoft) is one of the most influential people in the world. He is co founder of one of the most recognized brands in the computer industry with nearly every desk top computer using at least one software program from Microsoft. Bill Gates also the richest man in the world and has held the number one position for many years.

Lets put Innovation and Invention aside, lets discuss about Novelty and Creativity.

Novelty?
Novelty (derived from Latin word novus for "new") is the quality of being new. Although it may be said to have an objective dimension (e.g. a new style of art coming into being, such as abstract art or impressionism) it essentially exists in the subjective perceptions of individuals. It also refers to something novel; that which is striking, original or unusual. The term can have pejorative sense and refer to a mere innovation.
                                                                                                                                         Wikipedia

Novelty is something new, original, unusual, unique, special, abstract. Our lecturer did told us about the BIG C and the small c. According to Mihaly Csikzentmihalyi's theory, creativity can be divided into big "C" and small "c". The big "C" have effect on others and is being accepted by the masses. Meanwhile, the small "c" serves personal satisfaction and fulfillment.

What about Creativity?
Did I mention creativity before? Let me recap, creativity is the ability to create something new/ invention, the ability to see something in a new way, thinking. Think outside the box search for original idea no one else may know exist only the creator of the original idea knew. Everyone born with creativity, its a give to us, as we grow older will soon gone as we gain knowledge. Everyone can be creative all you need is think creatively, some knowledge (not too much), and the most important one is attitude, without attitude you cannot be a creative people.

According to lecturer note there are four types of creativity. Creative people fall into these four categories:

  1. Aesthetic Organizers
  2. Boundary Pusher- those who take the existing idea and push it a little bit further.
  3. Inventor- thos who take existing knowledge and creates new ideas.
  4. The rarest group: Boundary Breaker- Example like Leonardo da Vinci, the Copernicuses, these people did not use existing knowledge nor existing idea of other people other than their own idea which no one ever think, hear, see, feel about it before.

What I knew about Creativity after Creative Studies class

Creativity refers to the phenomenon whereby a person creates something new (a product, a solution, a work of art etc.) which has some kind of value. What counts as "new" may be in reference to the individual creator, or to the society or domain within which the novelty occurs. What counts as "valuable" is similarly defined in a variety of ways.
                                                                                                                                       Wikipedia

Creativity is an act turning new and imagination ideas to reality. Creative people use their right brain more than their left one, that is because right brain is responsible for our creativity.

Here are some example of Creative Picture:

Basically, you all know what this design is for. Yes, its a toilet tissue holder. Very creative.

They replace the filament with a match.

This is not a gun, this is a book with gun shape book cover, how creative!

Those eggs is like watching a real life horror movie, the drawing of faces on the eggs enhance the emotion of those eggs.

Right Brain and Left Brain

Definition

This theory of the structure and functions of the mind suggests that the two different sides of the brain control two different “modes” of thinking. It also suggests that each of us prefers one mode over the other.

Discussion

Experimentation has shown that the two different sides, or hemispheres, of the brain are responsible for different manners of thinking. The following table illustrates the differences between left-brain and right-brain thinking:

Left BrainRight Brain
Logical
Sequential
Rational
Analytical
Objective
Looks at parts
Random
Intuitive
Holistic
Synthesizing
Subjective
Looks at wholes
